DEFINITION:
Under the direction of the Working Foreman, maintains and repairs Municipal vehicles and equipment.
EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED:
- Clean, repair, rebuild, paint, and weld City vehicles and equipment, including, but not limited to, engines (gas, diesel, natural gas, propane), transmissions, hydraulics, drive train, wheels, steering, brakes, body and frame;
- Implement preventative maintenance programmes, as described by the Motor Vehicle Inspection Manual and the City of Terrace, and conduct Commercial Vehicle Inspections on City vehicles and equipment;
- Maintain a clean and orderly shop, tools and service-related equipment;
- Use gas and electric welding equipment to perform metal fabrication;
- Arrange purchase and pickup of parts, as required;
- Assist in job estimates and control of costs;
- Test drive equipment including, but not limited to, loader and plow/sander trucks, and other City equipment, as required;
- Verify time sheets, maintain vehicle log books and other records, as required;
- Respond to call-outs, as per the Collective Agreement;
- Instruct others in equipment operation and maintenance;
- Other duties, as required.
MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:
- Secondary school graduation;
- Minimum of five years' related experience;
- Red Seal Heavy Duty Mechanic or Red Seal Commercial Transport Mechanic;
- B.C. Inspector's Authorization Number for Commercial Vehicle Inspection Programme;
- Ability to operate related equipment;
- Good working knowledge of welding and metal fabrication;
- Good physical condition and able to perform heavy manual labour;
- Supervisory experience;
- Must provide own hand tools;
- Good working knowledge of WorkSafe BC Regulations, as relates to the work involved;
- First Aid training;
- Ability to work independently and to accomplish tasks and assignments;
- Ability to deal effectively with co-workers and the public;
- Good written and oral communication skills;
- Valid Class 3 B.C. Driver's Licence, with air brakes endorsement.
