DEFINITION:
Under the direction of the Roads Foreman, operates special equipment for refuse, recycling and compost collection. Other duties may include pavement patching, sewer main cleaning, drainage cleaning, snow removal and winter road maintenance and performs manual duties as assigned.
EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED:
- Operate special equipment assigned on a day-to-day basis including, but not limited to, single-person refuse truck, gas detectors, Vactor sump cleaner and hydraulic sewer cleaning equipment;
- Inspect equipment daily for visible damage, for fluid and fuel requirements, electrical systems, tire checks, etc., and report any defects to Working Foreman;
- Assist with assembly, removal and adjustment of attachments to various pieces of equipment;
- Prepare and maintain daily operational and collection records and reports;
- Dispose of collected refuse in designated area;
- Assist with manual duties including, but not limited to, drainage ditch maintenance, brush clearing, road marking, pipe laying, shovelling, pavement, flagging, concrete work, jack hammering, street sign maintenance, valve and hydrant maintenance, refuse collection, etc.
- Emergency call outs and shift work may be required;
- Other duties, as required.
MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:
- Grade Twelve education;
- This is a training position with a maximum duration of two years. Within 24 months from the date of hire into Special Equipment Operator I position, the Special Equipment Operator I must meet the qualifications to be a Special Equipment Operator II. When these qualifications are successfully met, the employee may be promoted to a Special Equipment Operator II classification. Failure to meet the qualifications of a Special Equipment Operator II may result in layoff from the Special Equipment Operator I position.
- Demonstrated ability to operate relevant equipment safely and efficiently;
- Good physical condition and able to perform heavy manual labour;
- Training in confined space entry and ability to work in confined spaces;
- Good working knowledge of WorkSafeBC Regulations and the Motor Vehicle Act, as it pertains to the work involved;
- First Aid training;
- Ability to work independently and to accomplish tasks and assignments;
- Ability to deal effectively with co-workers and the public;
- Valid Class 3 B.C. Driver's Licence, with air brakes endorsement.
